Something I have been wanting to do for a really long time.
On April 28th, I head out for New Orleans for a week to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. I volunteered locally some years ago. Our project was to do some landscaping at the local Restore. The Restore is a place people can drop off old appliances, fictures, cabinets, etc., and they'll get used in Habitat projects or sold to raise funds.
I was watching an episode of This Old House and I decided I didn't want to wait any longer to do this.
I started looking into plane tickets, or the cost of driving, plus hotel and meal expenses, and I realized this was going to cost quite a bit to volunteer. I found information about a place to stay called Camp Hope, a converted school that serves as dormitories for Habitat volunteers. I could stay there and get 3 meals a day for only $150 for the week.
The plane ticket was a different story. In order to get the dates I wanted, it was going to be $350 or more. If I traveld on different days, I could get it cheaper, but then I would have only been able to "work" for 3 days. Or if I drove to Columbus and flew out of there, I could cut my ticket in half almost. But by the time I drove to Columbus, parked the car for the week, I would have really only saved $50.
A very generous coworker came to me rescue! She and her husband donated thier frequent flyer miles to me and I was able to get a ticket, for the days I wanted, out of Cleveland, for the grand sum of $0.00!
I am really looking forward to this trip! Now all I need to do is figure out what I am going to do for transportation in New Orleans!
