6AM wake up again. Breakfast again. I didn't make lunch, I planned on going to get something from one of the local diners today.
Got to the construction site before Richard and Sam. Once they got there, we were given out assignments. Myself and Lloyd were to continue hanging doors and working on the trim for the closets.
We started with the door to the back bedroom. It looked like it would fit. But looks can certainly be deceptive. The framing was so out of square and not plumb, that hanging the door plumb would have been impossible. There was nothing we could do. Trying to do what we did yesterday with the other bedroom door was a lot of work, and I don't think we wanted to go through that again.
However, we were able to get the door to fit in the mudroom door opening! Lloyd had never hung a door before, so I was being a teacher to him during this time, too. He was a good assistant. :-) Lloyd also installed the door handle set - another thing he had never done before.
I am quickly discovering that there are a lot of people down here that are coming, not because they have a clue as to what they are doing, but because they want to do something. They want to be part of something bigger than themselves. They are of all ages and abilities. I commend them all for the effort they give to help a fellow American.
After we finished hanging the doors, Lloyd and I moved on to the trim around the closet doors. We were able to trim the exterior of the closets, but the walls in the house were too thick for the jambs. The trim inside the closet would not work. We would have to shave the drywall down to be even with the closet jamb. We had to do that with some of the regular doors and it's a pain. Sam said he wouldn't make us do it and he would leave it for another crew.
That bathroom door still isn't working right. We never did get the second bathroom door finished off yet, either.
A plumbing crew came to put in the water and sewer lines. They worked real fast, dug a big ass hole in the front yard. Down here, where it doesn't get minus 20 degrees, they can bury a water line 12 inches deep. There's still a big ass hole in the yard - the building inspector has to come look at it first. Richard says he'll get a group of high school students and a dozen shovels and have them fill in the hole. :-)
Richard told me he has built so many houses and knows the inspectors well enough, that he has actually had a framing inspection done over the phone. At the rate the Habitat for Humanity is building houses, they're trusted to do it right, I guess.
The ice cream man came back! I got myself a chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich.
After we were done with the doors, Richard and I moved our attention to the steps for the back porch. He cut two of the stair stringers and I cut the other one. We assembled them and tacked them up to the back porch and leveled it. I then cut the 22 deck boards for the runs and risers and started getting them installed. I was able to get 95% of the stairs done, before the day was over - I worked late, until 4PM. Everyone except Sam and I had gone home. I was determined to get them done. Oh well. As long as it doesn't rain tomorrow, I should be able to get the stairs done in an hour and move on to the railings. Still need to set the bottom post in concrete.
Came back to camp (no drunks in my sights tonight) and cleaned up. That shower felt so good. I can't remember when I have been this tired. Oh wait, yes I can, it was yesterday.
Diner was a big salad, sweet and sour chicken, some kind of peanut butter noodles that were supposed to be like some kind of Thai noodle (oh well, it was food), some veggies and some cake. Not sure what the cake was called, but it was full of brown sugar and tasted good! I say with Lilly and her boyfriend Otter, both are on my team. They're nice people. They come from the Philadelphia, PA area.
Not going anywhere tonight. I might sit in the Gator's Den (computer room where I type this now) and watch some of the NBA playoffs. I'm dead tired and loving it.
The Jazz Fest started again for the weekend tonight. Stevie Wonder is playing tommorow, along with probably 9 other bands. From what I can tell, the Jazz Fest is something to see. Lots of music. If I get a chance to go, I will. But I came her to build houses and if I can't go to Jazz Fest, it will be no loss for me. There's always next year.
