Computers Minimize

I helped my father build a heathkit computer when I was 9 years old. Since then I have always had an interrest in computers and programming them.

I learned how to program in the BASIC programming language in junior highschool and built a Z-80 based computer a couple years later. Some of the computers I I have used/owned are:

  • Heathkit
  • Cyzern System 7000 (Z-80)
  • Digital PDP-11
  • Atari 130XE
  • Atari 520STfm
  • IBM System 34
  • Apple Macintosh
  • IBM PC XT
  • Various Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP machines

I have built several PC's and am constantly upgrading the hardware on the machines I currently use.

I was an early adopter of using a home network consisting of a Windows 2000 Server that I use to share files and printers with the workstations over our 100 Base-T network. The network also gives me the ability to share my DSL line amoungst these computers and my laptop when I bring it home to work.

Model Railroading Minimize

I have been an armchair model railroader since I was a child. A co-worker and friend of my father's had a collection of Model Railroader magazines and he let me borrow a stack of them on day. It was difficult to put the issues down. I have designed many different model train layouts, but have only built them in my mind. I have started several small layouts, but due to moves or other space limitations, none of them ever got very far.

I was first interrested in the HO scale (1:87). HO scale is small enough to get a lot of train in a small area, yet big enough to have a substantial amount of detail. My fascination with scenery and tall bridges quickly became a convert to N scale (1:160).

I have recently built some small craftsman kits in hopes of building a medium sized around-the-wall layout in my basement office. I have started a simple design, but have not completed the conceptual stage. In the mean time, I will be starting on a simple 2' x 4' N scale layout with a small loop and a couple of switches. It'll give me someplace to showcase some of my buildings and rolling stock as well as giving me a place to practice some scenery techniques.

Music Minimize

I have been playing the guitar on and off since I was 13 years old. My older brother, Edward, was learning how to play from a friend of his and I became interrested as well. I bought my first electric guitar from a local music shop and started taking guitar lessons. I never had much patience for formal guita lessons, so I never really played it much.

After joining IdeaStar, I learned that the Creative Director was an avid guitarist and played in a local rock band. It interrested me enough, to start playing again. One of my other co-workers sold me her Fender Stratocaster electric guitar. I also have a Yamaha acoustic.

With the help of the eMedia guitar instruction CD-ROMs, I have gotten decidedly better. I'm certainly no expert, barely an intermediate player. But I have been able to enjoy playing guitar like I haven't in years. My musical interrests vary all over the spectrum. I am a big fan of the playing style of Carlos Santana and have spent considerable time trying to learn some of his more complicated licks. I also like playing blues as well as classical and country.

Amateur (Ham) Radio Minimize

I got my first ham radio license in 1989 just before I joined the US Air Force. I was issued the callsign N8JMS. Since then, I have passed every level of Ham Radio exam and now hold a Extra Class license and have since changed my callsign to KG8O.

Ham Radio is a very diverse hobby with more aspects than I could possibly describe here in a short paragraph. I tried to get involved with as many different aspects as I could. I have owned several different radios over the years. Several of them were designed for long-range communications than can reach just about every corner of the world. I also have several smaller radios, hand-helds and mobiles, used for local communications.

Some areas of the hobby I have interrest in:

  • HF commincations (long-range)
  • DX chasing (loggin new contacts in other countries)
  • Public service (volunteering time for fundraising events)
  • Digital communications (computer to computer communcations over radio)
  • APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System)

As I often do with many of my hobbies, I have recently rotated Ham Radio out of the list of primary hobbies by selling off most of my gear. I still have my VHF/UHF modile radio and a VHF/UHF hand-held radio. The antenna seen in the picture above came down in a wind storm a while ago. I haven't gotten around to replacing it.

Electronics Minimize

I helped my Father build a small heathkit computer when I was 9 years old. Ever since then, I have had an interrest in building small electronic circuits. I have bought and built many small circuits from Radio Shack for various puposes. I even designed and built a small circuit to automatically turn on my car headlights when it gets dark.

Many of my latest projects were built as accessories to my Ham Radio gear. Pictured to the left is a 4 output audio mixer. I used it to send the audio output from my Ham Radio to different filters or recording devices. I also recently built a variable bandwidth notch filter that works great for filtering out the interference around a morse code signal.

Firearms Minimize

I am an avid and competent (and safe) shooter. I have been interrested in firearms for several years and bought my first handgun in 1993.

I visit a local indoor range from time to time to practice. I try and compete in a local tactical shooting competition when time permits.

At one time, I was interrested in high-power rifle competition. I used to have a mint-condition military suprlus M-1 Garand that was bought through the US Army's Civilian Marksmanship Program. But, upon seeing the pristeen condition of the rifle, I didn't have the heart to ruin it by shooting it! And since I'm not much of a "collector" I decided to sell it to someone who is.

As often as I shoot, I wanted to try and increase my accuracy as well try and save some money, I decided to start reloading my own ammunition. I bought a Lee Loadmaster progressive press to reload handgun ammunition. I have dies to reload both the 9mm and .40 S&W calibers. I will be adding .45 ACP as well .38/357 Magnum to the list very shortly.

Most of what I do these days is tactical self-defense training. I am a certified instructor for Ohio's concelaed carry law and give training from time to time to prospective licensees.

Woodworking / Home Improvement Minimize

For as long as I can remember, I've been helping my father with one home improvement or wood working project or another. My father has taught me a lot, many times just by watching him.

When I had the opportunity to buy my own home, I didn't want a perfect house, but a house that had the potential to be perfect. Since moving in, I have completed three major home improvement projects.

I finished off another corner of the basement. I use this new room as an office, a workshop, and, well, a junk room mostly! It's where I keep my computer and the server. The DSL line also comes in here and is connected to the home network. I have an attachment for my desk that my reloading press attaches to for quick use.

I also remodeled the 50's style kitchen. I ripped out all of the old cabinets and stripped the outside walls to bare studs. Where the two double-hung windows were, there is now a sliding glass door that will lead to the deck once it is built. I insulated and finished the ouside walls. I installed all new cabinets and countertops and even relocated the sink. I finished the floor using Armstring Sliplock pre-finished laminate hardwood floor.

One of my latest large project was to build a backyard shed. It's rather large at 10' x 8', but I needed it in order to clear out the clutter that was building up in the garage. It gave me an excuse to buy a new tool that I have always wanted, a pneumatic nailer and compressor. I used it again the following summer to build my deck. I also want to get a smaller nailer to help me with smaller woodworking projects.

Photography Minimize

When I joined the military, it was my hope and desire to be part of Law Enforcement. But the Air Force wanted me to be a photographer more! I took what I was learning on the job, and started a new hobby from it.

I have studied and developed skills in many aspects of photography including:

  • Photojournalism
  • Portraiture
  • Sports/Action photogrpahy
  • Forensic/Investigative photography
  • Aerial photography
  • Black and White
  • Color Prints
  • Color Slides
  • Developing Negatives and Slide Film
  • Projection printing
  • Manual special effects
  • Digital photography

Although time and money keep me from some of the aspects of photography I enjoy, I still use the skills developed in every picture I take.
